Abstract
Objectives This paper investigates the origins, changes, and the constructive principles of Hyungbangjihwang-tang(ûªÛÁò¢üÜ÷·).

Methods Hyungbangjihwang-tang and other related prescriptions were analyzed in terms of their pathological indications, based on previous literature including ¡ºGogeumuigam(ͯÐÑì¢Êü)¡», ¡ºSanghannon(ß¿ùÎÖå)¡», ¡ºUihagjeongjeon(ì¢ùÊïáîî)¡», ¡ºDonguisusebowon ? Sasangchobongwon(ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª ? ÞÌßÚõ®ÜâÏé)¡», ¡ºDonguisusebowon ? Gabobon(ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª ? Ë£çíÜâ)¡», ¡ºDonguisusebowon ? Sinchukbon(ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª ? ãôõäÜâ)¡».

Results and Conclusions The origins of Hyungbangjihwang-tang can be seen in three sections depending on the classification of medicinal herbs. Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq.(ûªËÎ), Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischk.(ÛÁù¦), Notopterygium incisum Ting(˶üÀ), Aralia cordata Thunb.(Ô¼üÀ), and Plantago asiatica L.(ó³îñí) originated from Hyungbangpaedok-san(ûªÛÁø¨Ô¸ß¤) included in ¡ºGogeumuigam¡». Poria cocos Wolf.(ÜÚ?) and Alisma canaliculatum(÷ÊÞá) originated from Ohryoung-san(çé?ߤ) included in ¡ºSanghannon¡». Rehmannia glutinosa for hueichingensis(âÙò¢üÜ) and Cornus officinalis S. et Z.(?â¼ë) originated from Yukmijihwang-tang(ë»Ú«ò¢üÜ÷·) included in ¡ºUihagjeongjeon¡».
Hyungbangpaedok-san was transformed into "Paedok-san" in ¡ºChobongwon(õ®ÜâÏé)¡», Hyungbangpaedok-san in the ¡ºGabobon(Ë£çíÜâ)¡» and ¡ºSinchukbon(ãôõäÜâ)¡». Yukmijihwang-tang was mentioned as a Soyangin medicine in the ¡ºChobongwon¡» and was later transformed into a Suhwagije-tang(â©ûýÐþð÷·) in ¡ºGabobon¡». The meaning of Yukmijihwang-tang inherited in ¡ºSinchukbon¡» as Dokhwaljihwang-tang and Hyungbangjihwang-tang. The medicinal herbs in Hyungbangjihwang-tang can be categorized in three sections by their functions, Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq., Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischk., Notopterygium incisum Ting, Aralia cordata Thunb., and Plantago asiatica L. scatter the Pyohan(øúùÎ) and make the Pyoeum(øúëä) drop. Poria cocos Wolf.(ÜÚ?) and Alisma canaliculatum(÷ÊÞá) make the Pyoeum(øúëä) drop through Lee-su(××â©). Rehmannia glutinosa for hueichingensis(âÙò¢üÜ) and Cornus officinalis S. et Z.(?â¼ë) tonify Shin-won(ãìêª). The each principles of medicinal herbs corresponds to the stage of the ¡°Cold-related Diarrhea in Soyangin Spleen Cold-based Exterior Cold disease(á´åÕìÑ Þ¡áôùÎøúùÎÜ» ØÌëäÜ» ãóùÎÜÙ÷ÔØÌëäñû)¡±.
